MPs use foul language during the debate,annoys speaker!

There is a lot of cut and thrust on the floor of Parliament's debating chamber, but there are rules about what can and cannot be said. Members of Parliament may never use abusive language , personal reflections,insults or swear words.(you would be surprised how many MPs do!)

Upset by the “increasing use of foul language in the august House.” Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms Anne Makinda,has vowed that from now on culprits would be ejected out of the House.

Disgracefully, the Parliament has increasingly heard some "vulgar" and "indecent" words used by MPs during its session — as a result, debates and discussions in the Parliament often degenerated into a fracas.

The image of Parliament has been tarnished because instead of debating issues,they concentrate on name calling and debasing each other.

Ms Makinda wondered how the Mps all of whom are dressed immaculately, would dare utter ‘dirty words’ in the House in the full glare of the public.

‘Shame on you,’ the Speaker lashed out. She said that she had received a message on her mobile phone from a parent who said his family could no longer watch the Parliament session together with children in the sitting room because of the offensive language the Mps use.

Some of the words you use are in such bad taste that I cannot even utter them here, said the Speaker, insisting that Mps must always conduct themselves in a manner expected by the public.

Mps were sent by the electorates to discuss development and issues of national interest and not to engage in such cheap politics as witnessed on Monday.

Some MPs engaged in name calling and used derogatory terms in the afternoon and evening sessions as they debated the Prime Minister’s Office budget estimates.

MPs ought to be free to express themselves without fear of prosecution,but rights imply duties. They expected to act in an orderly manner to preserve and promote the dignity of the parliament.

Parliamentary practice involves showing mutual respect, moderation, compassion, care, and consideration. The use of abusive words or phrases by the members of the parliament should highly discouraged.

When the latter does not keep to the subject under discussion or prejudices the debate by using abusive language, and may...if necessary, withdraw permission to speak,switch off his/her microphone ,or temporarily dismissed from the assembly.
